It's an Open House at YMCA Camp Wa Wa Segowea!

Camp begins in just two weeks!  If you're still considering sending your child to camp, it's not too late.  The one week sessions begin on June 24th and run until the last session beginning on August 19th.  While some sessions may be full or close to full, it's best to check with Camp Director Kat Fitzpatrick on which session or sessions fit into your summer plans.   She's at Wa Wa now and can be reached at 413-229-9110 and still by email- kfitzpatrick@cdymca.org.

If you still would like to visit the camp ahead of time, there's just a couple Open Houses left!   There is no better way to prepare yourself and your camper for their summer experience at Camp than an onsite tour.   The Open Houses left are scheduled for tomorrow, June 10th and next Sunday, June 17th, both from 2-4 pm.

What do you see on the tour?  We cover the places campers see on a regular basis.  The tour generally starts in the lodge, headed up to see what a typical cabin will look like when camp is in session.

From there, it's up to Mount Beacon, the shower house and bathroom facilities.

Then it's a short walk up to the chapel to see the great lake view.

Then it's back the same path to the dining hall.  Questions are often raised along the way such as  "What are the pickup and dropoff times for the kids?" and how's the food?

We head into the main lodge and maybe grab a snack or a cup of lemonade.

From there it's onto the parade field, where many camp activities take place.

Often on a tour, a topic of conversation is Harmon Pond and it's inhabitants.
Can we fish here?    and   "How often do we swim"?

The tour continues when we take the trail up to the council ring for a
brief rest on the benches.

Campers and parents can just imagine the campfires that will take place here, along with the favorite camp songs being sung and stories being told.

We then head up to the overlook above the big dock area and then up to the Nature Lodge where Arts and Crafts take place.

It's close to the end of the tour now as we make our way back to the parade field where we see the magnificent front portion of the Main Lodge.

For a building built in 1928 of American Chestnut, it stands the test of time and is a favorite spot in camp.  It's been said that when one is sitting in the special chairs on the front porch and staring out to the lake, you simply forget all your troubles and worries and you become a part of the magic of Segowea!

Don't miss your chance!

We do hear lots of questions on the tours and in general.    For the next few blog posts, we'll try to answer some of the most frequently asked ones.    If you have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments and we'll make every effort to answer them!

Here's just a few recent ones-

Do you have a nurse on duty?

We do have a RN on duty.  Patty Calnan who was with us in 2010 will be returning for the summer.  She, or an emergency medical technician is on duty at all times.

What is the visitor policy?

There is no official visitor's day.  Parents are welcome to visit and tour Camp Wa Wa Segowea on opening and closing days of each session.  We ask that parents do not visit during the summer sessions.

What are the pickup and drop off times?

For drop offs, all campers should arrive and register on Opening Day (Sundays) at 2:00 pm.   Camper pickup begins at 5:00 pm Friday afternoon, the closing day of the session.  All family members are invited to a cookout that begins at 5:15 pm.  If other arrangements need to be made, contact the camp director.

What are the counselors ages?

Counselors are college-age young adults who care about the children.  They are loving, patient, responsible, dedicated to teaching, and they like sharing safe outdoor fun!

What kind of care package can I send to my child?

Please keep mailed packages small.  Please DO NOT SEND FOOD, as the Health Department does not allow food in camper cabins because food attracts raccoons and other animals.   We suggest sending games, cards, writing and reading material and lots of letters!

               Are you ready for camp?
